Supporting Progress is a 90-minute short course for staff who support student learning and behaviour (this includes teaching assistants, inclusion teams, pastoral teams and SENCOs). It is not designed for teachers, though teachers say they find it very helpful. Rather, it looks at support-based strategies and approaches to help students get the most out of school – specifically, what works and, just as importantly, what doesn’t work.

Course outline

Supporting Progress consists of ten research-informed support strategies. The strategies include: raising high expectations; promoting stretch and stickability; the strategic use of praise and feedback; development of student impulse control; behaviour management; instilling pro-learning habits – and more. There is a mixture of practice and theory, but the focus is very much on the former.

Participants

This course is for staff who support student learning and behaviour, including teaching assistants, inclusion teams, pastoral teams and SENCOs. It is suitable for staff working across the key stages.
